In its continuing effort to be earth friendly, South Dennis, Mass.-based independent Ring Bros. Marketplace this week eliminated plastic bags from its stores, instead giving shoppers the option of 100 percent recyclable paper bags, reusable canvas bags, or reusing their own bags.

"We hope other local retailers follow our lead to help preserve the environment." said Pat Ring, grocery manager for Ring Bros.

This is just the latest initiative Ring Bros. has instituted in its efforts to be one of the greenest markets on Cape Cod. The retailer received a grant from the state of Massachusetts to explore bioenergy technology for in-store energy production, improved the efficiency of its cooling units to use less energy, and is exploring ways to improve recycling programs.

"The added cost of converting from plastic to all paper is inconsequential to the impact that plastic bags are having on the environment." said Laurie Carullo, owner of Nata's Noodles, one of the six individually owned businesses that make up Ring's departments. "We are doing everything we can to be as green as possible."

Ring Bros. consists of six independently owned businesses: Ring Bros. Markets which specializes in fresh produce, dairy, and grocery products; Harney's Liquors, which carries a large selection of wines, craft brews, and top shelf liquors; Dark Horse Beef and Deli offers all natural beef, chicken, cheese, and deli products; Spinner's Pizza & Burrito prepares gourmet pizzas, burritos, take home meals, and homemade desserts; Chatham Fish & Lobster features fresh fish, shellfish, and lobster; Nata's Noodles and Montilio's Express round out the marketplace's offerings with desserts, freshly made pasta, and prepared gourmet foods.
