No More Plastic?
We have eliminated plastic shopping bags in an effort to help preserve the environment.
Why, you ask?
- The average American uses 300 bags per year
- For less than an hour
- 99% of plastic bags are not recycled
- 12,000,000 barrels of oil will be used to make bags for Americans this year
- Each bag takes hundreds of years to break down
- As plastic bags break down they release toxins that contaminate soil and water
- Plastic bags kill over 100,000 marine animals every year
- Plastic bags are especially dangerous to Sea Turtles who mistake them for jellyfish, a main food source for the turtles
- Plastic bags have been found blowing around Antarctica
- It’s the right thing to do
Eliminating plastic bags is just the latest initiative the
Marketplace has instituted to be one of the greenest markets on Cape
Cod. Over the past two years Ring Bros. Marketplace has received a
grant from the state of Massachusetts to explore bioenergy technology
for in-store energy production, improved the efficiency of its cooling
units to use less energy and looked at ways to improve their recycling
programs.
